Suffering and Joy: A Divine Paradox

James 1:2-3 (New Living Translation), “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”

An opportunity for great joy and troubles of any kind don’t seem to go together, do they? Our finite minds struggle to make the connection between the two. Yet, we understand that if we don’t exercise, our muscles don’t develop. The saying “no pain, no gain” rings true.

None of us welcomes trouble though! So how do we transform our suffering and troubles into joy? Remember, we’re talking about true joy – not happiness. We can look to Christ for guidance. Hebrews 12:2-3 (New Living Translation) tells us about the suffering of Christ: “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.”

Reflecting on my own trials, I realize I haven’t always fixed my eyes on Christ as I should have. It’s easy to become absorbed in self-pity during trying times. Not fun! While it’s important to acknowledge our feelings, focusing on myself and my feelings only makes things worse. Instead, when we take those feelings and struggles to the foot of the cross and turn our gaze to the One who offers comfort and healing, He can restore our joy and brings peace to our hearts.

As you continue to grow in your walk with Christ, embrace the spiritual disciplines like confession, prayer, Bible reading, service, and praise. These practices will help you fix your eyes on Jesus and maintain your focus on the joy that awaits you!
