Music plays a large role in my life. I almost always have it playing in the background. When I’m stressed and put on something soothing, it lifts my spirit and helps me feel calm. When I’m feeling blue, happy music energizes me. When I’m stuck in traffic, spa music helps settle my nerves. And when I’m feeling nostalgic or romantic, I turn to soft love songs or smooth jazz that bring back sweet memories.
When my heart feels heavy and I long for a deeper connection with God, I turn to praise and worship. Those melodies remind me that I’m never alone. On the other hand, when I’m out shopping or eating somewhere and the music is harsh or vulgar, I can actually feel my peace slipping away — even my blood pressure seems to rise!
Music truly touches the soul. The Bible mentions music many times, encouraging us to sing and make a joyful noise to the Lord. One of my favorite verses says:
“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!”
— Psalm 95:1–2 (ESV)
So don’t worry about the critics around you (they’re always there!) — even if you’re tone-deaf. God gave you your voice, and He loves to hear you sing.
One of my favorite hymns is “God Leads His Dear Children Along.” Its lyrics remind me that no matter what we face, God gives us a song:
“Some through the waters, some through the flood,
Some through the fire, but all through the blood;
Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.”
No matter the season of life you find yourself in, trust that God will give you a song to sing — and in that song, you’ll find joy.
